Dear Supporters,

I am a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute Class of 1997 and I am a Major in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. I am currently a Platoon Commander at the 4th Force Reconnaissance Detachment in Hawaii.

I served 10 years active duty including tours with 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines and 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. While serving as a Company Commander for Fox Company 2/5 “The Blackhearts”, I was injured during a gunfight in Ar Ramadi, Iraq. I did not need to be evacuated from Iraq but it did get me thinking about those who did.

The Semper Fi Fund along with the Wounded Warrior Regiment helps Marines and Sailors who have been injured heal, adjust, re-integrate into the military or transition to the civilian sector. Wanting to find a way to support my fellow Wounded Marines and complete a life long dream of hike the Appalachian Trail, I decided to, with the support of my beautiful wife, family and friends, combine the two.

I plan on beginning my hike on the 28th of February 2011 and ending the 30th of June 2011. Starting in Springer Mountain Georgia and ending on the top of Mount Katahdin in Maine, I will try averaging 22 miles a day for 6 days a week. A schedule of where I am planning to be each day can be found on the hike website at AHIKEFORHELP.COM.

I also invite you to monitor the website as Blue (my dog) and I will be posting a journal, pictures, mileage updates along the way. If you have any suggestions, ideas or well wishes you would like to send please email me at ahikeforhelp@gmail.com, I could use all three.

If you would like to donate and support the hike there are two ways to do so. You can choose to use our PAYPAL account, which is on the website or you can send a check to this address:

To insure that everyone’s donation is tax deductible, we will be teaming up with the Semper Fi Fund (a 501(C)(3) organization.) I will be submitting 93% of donations to the Semper Fi Fund and they in turn will Grant the money to my fellow Wounded Marines that are attached to the Wounded Warrior Battalion. 7% of the money raised will be used to defer the cost of the hike.

If you would like to contact me by phone please call me at (949)-547-7951.

Thank you for taking the time to help those who have served our country and were injured while doing their duty.

Sincerely,

Ian P Brooks
