Semper Fi Fund Returns to Toms River Yacht Club: Recovering Vets Learn to Sail and Race Sailboats May 19 – 21, 2017
Team Semper Fi Vets Challenge Themselves Sailing in the Open Ocean
Who: Twenty service members from the Semper Fi Fund’s Team Semper Fi Program take on the challenges and thrills of the ocean in Toms River, New Jersey.
Why Sailing?
“Sailing is a challenging sport that people of all ages and abilities can participate in. Just being on the water is therapeutic, add in the teamwork and camaraderie that is enjoyed by sailors and our service members will excel. What is most rewarding to our service members about sailing is it’s a tactical sport that requires attention to detail and teamwork in executing an objective,” says TSF Manager and Navy Veteran Robert Donnelly.
WHAT: Semper Fi Fund’s athletes will participate in the second-annual Team Semper Fi Sailing Camp hosted at Toms River Yacht Club with coaching instruction from expert yacht club members. Ensign Fleet 63 of the Barnegat Bay are providing the sailboats for the three-day camp, at no cost. Service members will learn the basics of sailing, how to navigate a race course and enjoy a friendly three-event race series on the final day.
Toms River and Pine Beach Yacht Clubs are hosting Semper Fi Fund athletes for dinner each night to honor their service and sacrifices. Toms River has also graciously donated the usage of the facility for the three-day camp.
WHEN: May 19-21, 2017
WHERE: Toms River Yacht Club
1464 Riviera Ave.
Toms River, NJ 08753
WHY: “Recovery Through Sport” has proven to be an ideal outlet for injured service members to hone both physical agility and mental focus, skills that are critical to navigating their recovery. Learning and practicing alongside fellow wounded service members, they can also trade stories, share strategies for coping with their injuries and forge lasting friendships.
