2011 Guest of Honor : Cpl Patrick Myers
Cpl Patrick Myers enlisted in the Marine Corps in Dallas, Texas in 2003. After graduating from boot camp at MCRD San Diego, CA, he attended Field Radio Operator School and upon completion was designated with an 0621 MOS. Cpl Myers was initially assigned to 2nd Marines HQ Battalion. In February 2005, Cpl Myers Battalion was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While in Iraq, he was reassigned to a private security detail force to provide specialized security throughout the local theater of operations.
In November 2005, while transiting to a front line security post in Anbar Province, Cpl Myers convoy was struck by a roadside bomb. The vehicle he was driving encountered a direct hit. He was immediately medevaced to the battalion aid station for initial triage and then flown to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany. Due to the severity of his injuries, Cpl Myers was flown back to the U.S. to be with his family while in critical care. After several months and numerous surgeries at Brook Army Medical Center, San Antonio, TX, Cpl Myers health was stabilized. As a result of the explosion, Cpl Myers lost both of his legs just above the knee. He was medically discharged from the Marine Corps in July 2007.
Since his return, Cpl Myers has struggled to adjust to his disabilities and memories of the incident in Iraq. He has attended an inpatient PTSD program along with two alcohol rehabilitation programs. Cpl Myers is now undergoing physical rehabilitation to learn to walk with prosthetics. He recently became engaged and is working to better his future. He is making an effort to become involved and provide assistance to other Marines who struggle with injuries and difficulty adjusting to a new life. He is also hoping to begin vocational training soon to one day reach his goal of owning his own motorcycle shop.
Cpl Myers awards include the Combat Action Ribbon, Purple Heart, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
About Helping Our Heroes Foundation:
Helping Our Heroes Foundation is a grass roots organization founded in 2011. The vision is to help those that serve so that we do not have to. These Heroes may come from the Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and National Guard or from our Local Police, Firemen and First Responders.
The vision is to support charities that directly support these heroes and do not have a robust fund raising operation in house. Each year the Board of Directors will select a charity to be the beneficiary of our fund raising activities. All proceeds from the funds raised – net of direct expenses – go to the selected Charity. No one receives any compensation and there are no expenses incurred for the fund raising.
Marketing materials and many of the expenses for fund raising activities are donated as in kind sponsorships. The Board of Directors appreciates your support in this endeavor. The 2011 recipient of the funds will be the Semper Fi Fund to help our injured marines, sailors and their families.
