5th Annual Maj Megan McClung Memorial Run
Aug 13, 2011 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
NAS Whidbey Island, WA – The Major McClung Memorial Run is a race dedicated to Major Megan Malia Leilani McClung (April 14, 1972 – December 6, 2006). She was the first female United States Marine Corps officer killed in combat during the Iraq War, while serving as a public affairs officer in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Major McClung’s parents began this event in order to have a race to remember their fallen daughter and to raise money to donate to the Semper Fi Fund.
The certified 5K, 10K and 5K Fun Walk courses at the Major McClung Memorial Run pass along a bluff overlooking the beach and just beside the runways at NAS Whidbey. If you are lucky while running you may see the Prowlers and Growlers the Navy and Marine Corps fly from this base as well as the Orion sub-hunters taking off or landing. Temperatures are typically cool with the breeze coming down the Admiralty Strait from the Pacific Ocean. A beautiful course with views of the Olympic Peninsula, the San Juan Islands and Victoria Island (Canada) in the distance.
Major McClung was an avid runner and triathlete who also organized a marathon in Iraq to coincide with the 2006 Marine Corps Marathon. Major McClung was the daughter of Michael and Re McClung of Coupeville, Washington.
New this year: 1st Place Male and Female 10K runners will receive Marine Corps Marathon guaranteed entries. See the website for more details.
