Helping Our Heroes Overcome Life’s Toughest Challenges with The Home Depot Foundation
Hero Stories
After Army Staff Sergeant Brian Schar suffered severe nerve damage to his arm and the loss of both legs, he faced challenges when areas outside of his home were inaccessible, making navigation as a double amputee impossible.
Through The Fund’s partnership with The Home Depot Foundation, his life has forever changed.
By widening his driveway and replacing his brick walkway with a smooth surface, grants from The Home Depot Foundation have ensured his safety and independence, both when using his prosthetics or his wheelchair. His newfound confidence to do things on his own has proved completely transformative.
In his own words:
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Semper Fi & America’s Fund, in partnership with The Home Depot Foundation, has paid for additional concrete to be poured around my home in multiple areas so that I would be able to safely access more areas of my home, such as my backyard so that I can play with my children more and not be confined to a small area due to grass. My driveway has been widened so I can now maneuver my wheelchair around my vehicle, and the removal of an unsafe brick walkway in the front of our home that has caused me to fall out of my wheelchair on multiple occasions and presented many trip hazards while walking on my prosthetics.
The Schar family
The Home Depot Foundation has lifted the financial burden of home repairs and has provided a grant to have our home’s exterior repaired and repainted. By providing these grants, our home is something we can be proud of again and not have to worry about the stress of financial burdens that would otherwise hinder us from making much needed improvements.
The Home Depot Foundation, and the many other private and individual donors, has made such a positive impact on not just my families’ lives but also the lives of so many more American veterans.
