From Injury to Victory: A Double Amputee Heals Through Team Semper Fi

HEro Story

While serving in Afghanistan in 2011, Marine Corporal Carlos Torres lost both legs in an IED explosion. Saving his life required multiple surgeries and overcoming life-threatening complications, yet his resolve to adapt, rebuild, and thrive as an amputee only grew stronger. Semper Fi & America’s Fund introduced Carlos to adaptive sports, opening a new path to healing that strengthened his overall well-being. On slopes, rivers, and trails, he rediscovered camaraderie, joy, and a renewed sense of direction.

As Carlos continued his recovery, The Fund opened doors with support that included:

  • Adaptive sports experiences and clinics through Team Semper Fi
  • Access to specialized equipment and expert coaching to return to the activities he loves
  • Peer-to-peer mentorship and community with fellow wounded veterans
  • Integrative wellness resources to build confidence and resilience

Today, Carlos is an avid athlete who takes on challenges once thought impossible, participating in activities both through Team Semper Fi and independently, including monoskiing, fly fishing, deep-sea fishing, rock climbing, white-water rafting, and mountain biking. Because of the ongoing support of our donors, he continues to grow stronger, discover new opportunities, and find a renewed sense of purpose.

The Fund means long-lasting support … multiple outdoor experiences have allowed me to maintain a positive attitude and outlook toward life.
