After losing both of his legs in an IED blast while serving in Afghanistan, Marine Corporal Jose Armenta refused to let adversity define his future. As a devoted husband and father of three, he envisioned a home where he could move freely and play alongside his children. Determined to remain active and engaged with his family, Jose faced the challenge of navigating his mulch-covered yard—an unsafe terrain for his prostheses and wheelchair.
Rather than accept limitations, Jose took action. With support from The Fund and our partnership with The Home Depot Foundation, Jose’s backyard was transformed into a safe, accessible space by replacing the mulch with astroturf. This upgrade not only improved mobility, but it empowered Jose to be the hands-on father he strives to be.
Today, Jose confidently navigates every corner of his yard, sharing meaningful moments with his family and proving that determination, paired with the right support, can overcome any obstacle.
