Steadfast Care, Steady Home — Henry’s Story of Resilience

In 2004, a suicide bomber’s attack forever changed Marine Sergeant Henry Maldonado’s life. He sustained severe burns, a traumatic brain injury, and lasting damage to his left side, including hearing loss. For more than 20 years since, one constant has remained: a circle of lasting support from Semper Fi & America’s Fund.

Like so many of our Nation’s wounded, Henry’s path hasn’t been linear. The daily challenges of his lifelong injuries have tested his resolve, even as he remains determined to move forward, provide for his family, and keep growing. What began as urgent help in a time of crisis has now become a steady source of strength and stability.

Over the years, The Fund’s consistent support has transformed Henry’s life through:

  • Physical and mental support through The Fund’s NeuroFitness Program, offering practical tools to strengthen memory, manage stress, and build daily resilience.
  • Family support grants and gas cards that make essential medical appointments possible, even when care is far from home.
  • An adaptive bed to provide safer, more restorative rest and ease the strain of daily routines.
  • A dedicated case manager who checks in regularly, offers encouragement, and ensures Henry has every resource needed on his road to recovery.

This is The Fund’s promise of lifelong, one-on-one care: easing financial burdens, opening doors to treatment, and surrounding a family with trusted, ongoing support. Because of that care—and his own unwavering determination—Henry can stay focused on his loved ones and committed to growth, strengthened by the assurance that he is Never Alone. Never Forgotten.
